LUTIM, WN—As part of strategic steps to ensure that the closure of ex-mining land is carried out responsibly and pays attention to environmental sustainability, PT Vale Indonesia, Tbk (PT Vale), a member of the Mining Industry Indonesia (MIND ID) group, will update post-mining documents for the Sorowako Block.
The initial steps were taken in consultation involving East Luwu (Lutim) stakeholders, in the Sasana Praja Hall of the Lutim Regent’s Office, Tuesday (25/11/2025).
This transparency effort is an important stage in preparing post-mining document updates. The activity was attended by Plt. Lutim Regional Secretary Ramadhan Pirade, PT Vale management, four sub-district heads from Nuha, Towuti, Wasuponda and Malili sub-districts, village representatives from empowerment areas, community elements, and other technical stakeholders.
PT Vale Indonesia’s Biodiversity and Mine Closure Specialist, Andri Ardiansyah, explained that updating post-mining documents for the Sorowako Block is part of the company’s strategic plan to continue its commitment to sustainable practices.
“Previous documents were prepared based on a permit that was valid until 2025. Now PT Vale has received a permit extension until 2035, and the form of the permit has changed to IUPK. Post-mining documents must automatically be extended,” he explained.
This permit extension increases the mining operation period until 2035, so that projections for land clearing, the reclamation process, and the remaining open area also experience changes. Post-mining planning is not just about stopping operations, but includes land rehabilitation, environmental management, dismantling of facilities that are no longer needed and monitoring.
“This is just an initial consultation, the document will only be prepared. We want to capture the aspirations of the government and the community before the preparation is carried out,” stressed Andri.
Stakeholders such as sub-district heads, village heads and community representatives use the forum to convey aspirations, ranging from strengthening CSR programs, transparency of environmental data, certainty of ecosystem recovery, to post-mining economic opportunities for the community.
In line with the company’s values, all input submitted through the forum is recorded and documented to become input in improving post-mining documents that will be prepared and submitted to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Responding to the initial consultation on updating PT Vale’s post-mining documents, Acting Regional Secretary of East Luwu, Ramadhan Pirade invited all parties to support the company’s agenda: “Thank God, East Luwu is not in debt. That’s because PT Vale is here. That’s why I said PT Vale is ours, so it needs to be protected,” said Ramadhan, who was immediately greeted by applause from the participants.
The change in status from Contract of Work to Special Mining Business Permit (IUPK) starting May 3 2024 brings a number of new consequences, including tax schemes, profit sharing, and profit sharing mechanisms from the company’s net profit. “In the IUPK it has been regulated that regional governments will get a share of the net profits. That is what must be understood by all,” he added.
This initial consultation is a sign of PTVI’s commitment to ensuring that all stages of mining operations will provide long-term benefits for the environment and communities around the Sorowako Block, even after mining activities end.(**)
